There are times when life challenges us with difficult circumstances and painful emotions. At these times it may be difficult to find clarity in which a compassionate guide can be helpful. In working with individuals at Midtown Counseling Services of CT, I have a deep respect for one's capacity to heal and I invite the integration of mind, body, spirit and emotions into this process. Themes that create blocks in your life can be explored in order to become more centered and fulfilled. While it is important to hear what you are saying, it is also important to hear what you are not saying, providing a deeper kind of listening.
As a practical, interactive, solution-focused therapist at Midtown Counseling, my approach is to provide insight to help individuals, couples, and families address current challenges and longstanding issues. With an integration of methods, I draw from a variety of styles and interventions. With a comfortable and confidential atmosphere, it is my hope that one can achieve the personal growth they are striving for. I provide individual adult, child, adolescent, and family counseling in order to treat a wide variety of emotional, behavioral, and relational problems.
Midtown Counseling also offers a special therapy approach for children with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) caused by physical, emotional, sexual abuse and/or loss of or separation from their caretakers. This approach integrates the use of trauma based treatment with art and play therapy. It is unique in how it combines traditional talk therapy with a multi-sensory visual, tactile approach that stimulates and relaxes the senses to markedly reduce anxiety, depression, and pain and significantly increase feelings of control, self-esteem, optimism, and happiness. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can also be integrated in with this therapy in order to fully reprocess traumas.
With children, I work on reducing emotional problems pertaining to attachment, control, identity, anger, and immaturity that produce behavior problems that do not always respond to rewards/consequences.
Information about Art and Play Therapy:
Art Therapy, as defined by The American Art Therapy Association, is a human service profession which utilizes art media, images, the creative art process and client responses to the artwork as reflections of an individual’s development, abilities, personality, interests, concerns, and conflicts.
Art Therapy practice is based on knowledge of human development and psychological theories. Art Therapy is used as a means of reconciling emotional conflicts, fostering self-awareness, developing social skills, managing behavior, solving problems, reducing anxiety, aiding reality orientation, and increasing self-esteem. Art therapy is an effective form of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults who are developmentally, medically, educationally, socially or psychologically impaired. Art Therapy can be a positive experience for all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds.
Play therapy refers to a wide variety of treatment methods, all of which incorporate the use of play. Play therapy is based on the belief that play is an essential part of people's lives and critical to healthy development. Play is the language of children. Play is the language of consciousness. For children, play is a natural method of learning, development and expression of feelings, thoughts and concerns.
Through play, children can learn about their own capabilities and limitations, social rules, the difference between fantasy and reality, rehearse new skills and come to master challenging and difficult situations. Play helps children find words for their experiences so that they can be understood by their peers and the adults in their lives. In play therapy, children can "play out" their problems or concerns at a safe psychological distance so they do not have to play it out the world. Play therapy allows children to express themselves in a manner that is ideally suited to their developmental level.
You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.
